How to Take Really Bad Family Pictures

It was a hot and sunny day last summer when we decided to take our 1 and 3 year old out for some family pictures on the beach. It was our son’s first birthday just a week earlier, so we decided it was a good idea to knock out 2 needed picture sessions in one go. And really, it was a good idea. But we had already taken our kids out to the beach earlier that day, so my son’s extremely pale and sensitive skin had gotten a little bit pink, mostly just on his face, the part that the camera focuses on, and the kids were wiped. That’s the start of a great recipe for success when taking really bad family pictures.

Next, you should always assume that your kids can be bribed with treats to smile for the camera and sit in the position you want. Try not to plan any other bribe or coercion. Because you want them standing up and running to the photographer holding up the really cool squeaky toy trying to get them to look.

Lastly, never give in to the crying of your children. Just keep on smiling, and assume that they will eventually do the same. Family picture success right there!
